Codale Electric Supply Salt Lake City Headquarters Facility
At 225,000 square feet, Codale Electric Supply's new Salt Lake City headquarters facility is one of the largest of any independent electrical distributor in the nation. Spanning a 13-acre lot, the massive 210,000-square foot main building features 59,000 square feet of office space and a 151,000-square foot distribution warehouse. In addition to the main building, the company built a 15,000-square foot facility for the assembly and modification of power substations, part of their fast-growing Codale Modification and Assembly Division (CMAD).
Construction systems include an all-steel column/beam structure and walls, with a joist and deck roof structure. The roof system is a single ply membrane, EPDM. The warehouse is comprised of columns at a minimum of 40' bay spacing, with a clearspan of 28'. Exterior finishes include a combination of painted concrete tilt panel and Texcote with a curtain wall system in the front entrance area, along with EIFS (Terra Neo) accented trims. Project construction costs exceeded $20 million.
The entire building is a showcase of the products Codale carries, as well as the most advanced technologies available in the electrical, lighting, datacom, utility, and energy services industries. More than 300 different lighting fixtures were installed in the building-every room and office features a different combination of fixtures and lighting controls, which are identified (along with data on average foot-candles and watts-per-square-foot) as part of the building's interior signage.
The building features Utah's only community-friendly "Lighting Lab," where everyone from customers, students, and industry professionals can experience first-hand the latest in lighting and lamp technologies and product offerings. The Lighting Lab is divided into distinct spaces dedicated to landscape and architectural lighting, as well as dining room, track, fluorescent, and LED lighting.
Another rapidly-growing area of their business, Codale also constructed a high-tech data center within its headquarters building. While the actual, working command center for the entire company's network operations (supporting all 11 branches), the data center also serves as a showpiece, demonstrating the company's extensive product lines and technical capabilities in the datacom arena. Among its impressive stats, Codale's data center has utilized the latest virtual server technology to reduce the company's energy consumption-cutting their CO2 emissions by an estimated 30 tons per year!
Throughout the building are 30 flat-screen HDTVs that are in use daily to display product information, sales promotions, training videos, presentations, and even traffic information. TV monitors in the retail/will call and warehouse areas display real-time order picking, allowing customers to monitor progress while they wait (although we like to supplement that occasionally with golf or March Madness coverage!).
A 3,500-square foot training facility on the second floor can seat more than 150 and is equipped with state-of-the-art multimedia and lighting programs, and is an ideal venue for hands-on training demos and other vendor and community events. Four large conference rooms are equipped with HDTVs and sophisticated multimedia systems, where we can project content from any computer for presentations and trainings.
Our new Salt lake facility also has a fully functional automation demonstration room for simulation of typical automation installations found in industry, including interconnected Programmable Automation Controllers, Electronic Operator Interfaces, Human Machine Interfaces, motion control and variable frequency drive systems, and control and communication networks. This room is utilized for training, demonstration, and proof of concepts of the latest in automation technologies by customers and product specialists.
At 1,500 square feet, our employee exercise room rivals any local gym, with full weight sets, an assortment of aerobic training machines, biometric equipment, a flat-screen TV, and dressing rooms with showers and lockers.
Behind the main building, an additional 15,000-square foot facility houses our CMAD shop, with a 20-ton Kone crane on a custom-built bridge and rail system. The shop was constructed with a special air exchange system to handle full-time manufacturing activity.
Part of our effort to utilize and showcase energy-saving products and technologies, lighting in nearly every space of the building is controlled by occupancy sensors, and every one of our staff workstations and offices uses a power strip with a personal occ sensor to minimize energy usage when staff are away from their stations; everything from monitors to lights to electric staplers go into hibernate mode during vacancy.
